| Mining and Minerals in
Maine
My mining adventures all started in 1996
when one of our frequent customers and
friend [Dick Bragg] told me about a mine
that he owned and had mined with the late
Charlie Bragg. This mine was only 5 miles
away in Hartford. I asked to see what
the mine looked like, and on my very 1st
trip to the top of the mountain, I got
the mining bug. Within a month we had
worked out a lease agreement that allowed
4 partners to ante up $500 each to get
the equipment to drill and blast.

Frederick Wiseman may imagine
his audience to be historians in the 23rd century
-- scholars who will someday need a primary source
to determine the color of a mail carrier's uniform
in 1999, or the rules of etiquette at a city council
meeting that wasn't conducted over the Internet.

The North Woods
Shhhhhh. I want to tell you
a secret. Ready? The eastern United States is
a vast megalopolis surrounded by endless suburbs,
right? Even the rural areas are nothing but
towns, woodlots and farmlands tamed by centuries
of development, right? There are no big wildlands
left here, right? Wrong! (MORE)
Downeast Autumn Journey:
To The North Country
by John David Fawcett Photographs by Lois Fawcett
My folks and I had the car packed
and ready to leave by 7:30 am on Saturday and
after driving all day we arrived in Portland,
Maine at 9:30 p.m. looking for lodging and dinner.
After finding a decent motel, we discovered
a nice little Mexican restaurant where we had
dinner and later drove around Portland admiring
the bay and the well preserved downtown area.
OK, OK... so we were lost! But it really was
a nice city, even at night... (MORE)

Handbook
Editorial Review by Amazon.com
Heading Down East to go blueberry picking, antiques
shopping, or beachcombing? From the best lobster
co-ops in the New Harbor and Boothbay areas to
the Rachel Carson Salt Pond, from top snowboarding
spots to gorgeous camping sites on Moosehead Lake,
this book has the whole Pine Tree State covered.
Author Kathleen M. Brandes knows the best places
for just about everything, and she doesn't keep
secrets.
As a longtime Mainer and a contributing
editor to Down East magazine for more than 20
years, she's a trustworthy tour guide and imparts
historical facts throughout the 650-page book,
helping to make a trip to Vacationland informative
as well as darn fun. The book is full of photographs
and dozens of clear area maps, as well as lists
of festivals and special events.
It's organized by county, so whether
you're going snowmobiling in Presque Isle or bargain
hunting in Freeport, you'll have all the information
you need in one glorious book. Brandes also includes
a "wicked useful" Yankee glossary and pronunciation
guide so you can sound like a native! --Erica
